Isn’t this fabric cute! I don’t have a lot of time before going to work this morning, so I thought I would post an simple tutorial. These potholders are super easy. They would be a great for a child learning to sew. Or an easy gift. That’s what I made them for. I made them with the leftover fabric from an apron. It made a nice gift set! (One day I will be posting the tutorial for the full apron.)
Materials needed:
This is for 2 potholders:
main fabric 8-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ cut 2
contrast fabric 8-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ cut 2
contrast fabric 5″ x 3-1/2″ cut 2
batting or Insul-Brite 8-/12″ x 8-1/2″ cut 2

1. Take your smaller pieces of fabric. These are for the hangers. Fold in half lengthwise. Press. Now fold long edges over to the center fold and press.

2. Now fold over at center seam and press again. Topstitch close to edges.

3. I have no idea how to describe this in words, the picture says it all. Bring the short edges together to form a loop. Baste together.

4. Pin the loop on the right side of your fabric. I placed mine in the center. In retrospect, I think it would look better when hanging if it was on the corner.
5. Lay a piece of batting down, place contrast fabric on top of batting with right side up. Place main fabric on top of contrast, wrong side up. The fabric pieces should be right sides together. Pin. Sew around edges with 1/2″ seams. Make sure you leave an opening for turning. Turn. Press. Press the edges to opening to the inside.

6. Topstitch around potholders, close to edges. Make sure you close your opening with the topstitching.

7. I topstitched around the edges 3 times, about 1/2″ apart, for a little bit of a quilted look.
That’s it. Very easy potholders. The cutting took the longest part!
