Quick and easy PS Vita Sleeve Tutorial. This took only an afternoon to make, and that was with the calculations. I’ve already done those for you. I did put a pocket on the back for earbuds (the Vita cords are too big). I don’t really think the pocket was needed. It just adds bulk and extra work. Just skip the pocket steps if you don’t think you need it. It has a Velcro closure instead of a zipper. My son was worried about a zipper scratching it. In hindsight, I would have put an opening in the cover flap so the Vita could be plugged in while in the case. Ty says he just leaves it open. You could easily add a large buttonhole to the center of the flap. I may do that later.
For the Main Body Fabric, I wanted something durable and not girly. (Even though when I asked Ty what color, he said “pink”. I really should have done it.) I used some gray denim recycled from Sarah’s cut off jeans. Didn’t think about it being stretch denim, but it seemed to work out okay. To give extra padding, I used fleece for the lining. I like the way the fleece worked out. You could also use flannel. Just make sure you use something soft, to protect the screen.
Cut your fabric:
Main Body Panels (Cut 2 of outside fabric, Cut 2 of lining fabric, Cut 1 of batting) – 10″ x 6″
Flap Panels (Cut 2 of outside fabric, Cut 2 of lining fabric, Cut 1 of batting) – 9″ x 4″
Pocket (Cut 2 of outside fabric, Cut 2 of lining fabric, Cut 1 of batting) – 5″ x 6″
Velcro 7″
Baste batting to flap lining.
Center Velcro 1″ below long edge of flap. Sew on using a zigzag stitch.
Pin flap pieces with right sides together. Leave the long edge opposite the velcro open. Sew around pinned edges using 1/2″ seam allowance.
Clip corners. I only pinked the edges to prevent fraying. The denim frays badly. I left most of the seam allowance for stability when topstitching.
Turn flap right side out. Push out corners (I use a chopstick for this). Topstitch close to edges.
Baste batting to outside main body pieces (Ignore the one that looks like the flap, I had to rip out those stitches. It should be the pocket.)
Place pocket pieces with right sides together. Sew along top edge (it should be 6″ across).
Turn pocket right side out. Press top edge. Topstitch close to edge across top edge.
Line up pocket to lower edge of main body (backside). The lining should be against the outside of the main body. Pin. Baste around pocket (leaving top open).
Pin flap to body. The right sides should be together. Sew flap to main body.
Center Velcro to front side of main body. The Velcro should be 1″ down from edge. (Don’t worry that mine looks farther, it was. It was too far. It needs to be 1″ down) Sew Velcro on using a zigzag stitch.
Place front and back panels of main body together. Make sure the top edges are together. The Velcro edge should line up with the flap edge. Make sure the flap is not sticking out. Pin the the short edges only. Sew together the short edges. Do not sew top or bottom together.
Press seams open and turn right side out.
Pin short edges of lining with right sides together. Sew using a 5/8″ seam allowance. Press seams open.
Carefully place the outside main body inside the lining. Right sides should be together. Make sure you’ve lined up the top edges. Pin around the top edges (the one with the flap). You will have pinned around the top opening. Do not pin through all four layers. This will be the opening of your sleeve.
Using a 1/2″ seam allowance, sew around the pinned edge.
Turn right side out. Pin top opening, making sure lining is not loose or wrinkled.
Topstitch around the top opening.
Pin bottom edge together, lining up side seams. All four pieces should be pinned together. Sew across bottom. Finish bottom edge with a zigzag stitch. Trim edges. Do not clip corners. The extra padding will give a nice rounded edge.
Turn right side out. Push out bottom corners.
This pattern can be used to make any gadget sleeve. Just use the following calculations:
Main Panel = L + H + 1″ x W + H + 1″
Flap Panel = L + 1″ x H + 3.5″
